Certified Veterinary Assistant Course

Dr. Amy Starr has taught the TVMA Certified Veterinary Assistant Course at UTEP and Dona Ana CC for the past four years.  She now offers the class through her clinic for a much reduced cost.

This 12 week, two day a week course is taught by CVAII Ciera Milam and Dr. Amy Starr.  The course runs twice a year, generally in the spring and fall.  It consists of 4 hour classes, two days a week, for 12 weeks.  The classes are constructed by the Texas Veterinary Medical Association, and include videos and manuals.  Ciera and Dr. Starr also add several laboratories into the course to make it a more hands-on experience.

Topics covered include:

  • Assisting the Veterinarian
  • Holding and Restraining
  • Performing a Physical Exam
  • Laboratory Testing
  • Exotics and Large Animal Care
  • Drawing Blood and Placing Catheters
  • Assisting in Surgery/Anesthesia
  • Emergency Care
  • Hospital Care
  • Paperless Files

After finishing this course and performing an externship, students are eligible to take the TVMA certification exam and apply for their state certification.

If you are interested in attending this course, please call Ciera Milam at the Mesa Veterinary Clinic for pricing and more information.  The next course will be starting in October.
